The teachers and teachers are the pillars of education system of our country. And of society in general, since, thanks to them, Spanish children and young people become useful men and women.
Teachers have a double task: teach knowledge and educate. Thus, their functions are very important and significant, since minors spend a minimum of 5 hours a day from the age of 6 to 16 -the 10 years that schooling is compulsory in Spain-, excluding weekends. , summer, Easter, Christmas and the holidays of each country, autonomous community and city.
It can be assumed that, with such responsibility, they should be, along with doctors, one of the professionals who earn the most in Spain. However, reality is far from theory.
Public school secondary teachers, that is, those who teach in the third educational tranche of the national education systems -which in Spain covers adolescents from 12 to 16 years old- tend to have a base salary of about 1,700 euros if you have no experience.
But to that base salary must be added the specific supplement – which pays for the specific characteristics of the position held, such as dangerousness or responsibility – and the destination supplement, which is charged according to the level of the position performed. And in some autonomous communities, such as the Balearic Islands, the two Castillas and Extremadura, a plus is also charged, called regional specific complement.
More than 2,400 euros gross
All these supplements mean that the average salary of teachers in public secondary education in Spain is about 2,430 euros gross per month (about 29,200 euros gross per year).
And to that salary we must add extra pay and the advantage that, like any official, it is an armored job: they cannot be fired.
But, as with the salary of doctors, the compensation of secondary school teachers fluctuates from one community to another in up to 630 euros gross per monthaccording to a report prepared by the UGT on teacher salaries in 2022, which means that a secondary school teacher can charge up to 28% more (or less) depending on the autonomous community in which you practice your profession.
in concerted school
In recent years, the average salary in private education has been in the range of 1,766 euros to 1,853 euros gross per month (to which should be added the extra payments they have by agreement). Therefore, the salaries of teachers in private and subsidized schools may have a salary difference of more than 500 euros, although they also vary depending on the autonomous communities in which they work.
