Munich Intel wants to produce urgently needed computer chips in a third EU country: The US group announced on Friday that it would invest 4.6 billion dollars in a factory in Poland. Semiconductors from the company and from other customers are to be processed and tested in the plant near Wroclaw.
CEO Pat Gelsinger said Poland is ideal for working with Intel’s Germany and Ireland sites. The manager added that the Eastern European country was “also very cost-effective compared to other production locations worldwide”.
The second largest semiconductor producer in the world already operates several large factories in Ireland, and Gelsinger also wants to build two new factories in Magdeburg in the coming years. Intel is currently negotiating with the federal government to increase the grants.
