DRIFT International Residency in Rio de Janeiro

31st October 2011

The next DRIFT International Residency – an intensive residency programme run by Zecora Ura and Persis-Jade Maravala, the makers of Hotel Medea – will take place in Rio de Janeiro 12-22 January 2012.

Uninterrupted by the normal constraints of lack of space, time or lack of other artists with whom to work, the richness of this residency lies in the fact that it is truly an exploration of group and individual practice. Each DRIFT Residency is designed with and for the individuals in that specific group.

Participants are encouraged to collaborate with each other, without the goal or pressure of a performance product. It is a model of process and community building that will provoke and inspire different ways of thinking about your practice and different contexts through which ideas are exchanged – that will include training, performing, nightly sharings of process, feedback, one-one-one sessions and insight into your own practice.

The residency will start with a symposium on ‘Small Acts of Disruption’ with speakers from Brazil and UK.  All events are included in the residency fee.

This residency will take place in the beautiful mountains of Rio De Janeiro between 3 locations: in Aldeia de Arcozelo, Vera Cruz Natural Reserve and C.P.C Gargarullo (Ponto de Cultura), which is located 120min coach trip away from the city centre and Rio beaches.

Cost is £450 for applications submitted before 20 November 2011 and paid before 2 December 2011, £550 thereafter, and includes food, accommodation, symposium and residency fees (but not flights). Places are limited, so if you're interested then write a statement of interest that describes your practice and what you would like to achieve through the residency and send it to thedriftproject@gmail.com

‘You are nothing but a big zero’ says the Fool to Lear. I paraphrase, apologies Mr Shakespeare. But this is not, you understand, a version of King Lear, although that was the starting point – a period of research supported by the Royal Shakespeare Company, in which Clod Ensemble discovered that what they didn’t want to do was make a version of the play.

Royal & Derngate's Flathampton, Brighton Festival

So here we are, half way through May, and therefore half way through the Brighton Festival, which runs 4 – 26 May (although the Fringe is cheekily marching on till 2 June this year).

The Bangkok Ladyboys have taken up residence on Grand Parade, the Famous Spiegel Garden is sparkling away on the Old Steine, there’s a crashed plane apparently made out of withies and tissue paper sticking out of the ground next to St Peter’s church, a shipping container or two on the seafront, Brighton's taxi drivers getting into gear for their annual collective denial of the very existence of The Basement arts centre (Where love?
